Obama, Osama, and that Iranian Fellow
Again we return to the CNN Wolf Blitzer interview with Senator Barack Obama.
The CNN Transcript includes the following exchange:
BLITZER: Senator McCain says that, if he's elected president, Iran will not become a nuclear power. Can you make that same commitment?
OBAMA: Well, I have said I will do everything in my power to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
I think it would be a game-changer. It would not be acceptable. It would be a threat to our strongest ally in the region, Israel. But it would potentially trigger a nuclear arms race in the region. And we have to both apply much tougher diplomacy, but -- and sanctions, potentially, if they do not move in a better direction. We have to give them some inducements to walk away from their nuclear program. And we should never take a military option off the table.
What are we to understand of Senator Obama's position from his response?
Senator Obama first fudges on making a firm committment to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. He only promises to "everything in his power" as opposed to using all the military, political, economic and diplomatic power of the United States. If Iran does gain nuclear weapons Senator Obama can be truthful in saying he did all within his power.
Second, Senator Obama says "we have to apply much tougher diplomacy". We are not sure what he means by that. Does he mean making mean faces at the negotiating table, or threatening to send angry letters or withdrawing our diplomats, or calling in our allies or the Red Cross?
Third Senator Obama talks about "sanctions, potentially, if they do not move in a better direction." His tough diplomacy would not include sanctions or the threat of sanctions? Sanctions would only potentially be used? Perhaps he hasn't noticed that the U.S. already imposes sanctions on Iran.
This is utter pie in the sky nonsense. Can anyone seriously vote for this man?
